Three women in a foreign land. They hardly speak the language, don’t know the customs, but vow to be good wives to young men they barely know. The year is 1946. The foreign land is the United States.

In WWII, during brief encounters and stolen moments, 6,500 American recruits married French girls even while fighting their way to Paris and beyond. An overwhelmed U.S. Army set up “cigarette” camps — Camp Chesterfield, Camp Lucky Strike — to “Americanize” the brides before shipping them to the care of in-laws they’d never met.

Cigarettes & Nylons follows three young women through hope and disillusionment, love and heartbreak, to a time when even as the world was burning, young hearts were set aflame.

Grai.gra01mbling, La., 2010. Côte Blanche produced a short documentary for Exhibits, Etc and The Eddie G. Robinson Museum. From simple beginnings in Louisiana’s cotton fields, Eddie G. Robinson strived for one dream - to coach football. Surmounting racial obstacles one touchdown at time, Coach Rob became one of the winningest coaches ever.

Robinson sent over 200 students to the professional football leagues including the first black player from an historically black college. He mentored for four NFL Hall of Famers, and the first African-American quarterback to win the Superbowl, Doug Williams.

Not only did Eddie Robinson transform the world of football, he gave young men the chance to live the American dream in at time when adversity seemed undefeatable.

By age 25, American Film magazine dubbed him “father of the Cajun cinema” as his low-budget, French dialect “gumbo westerns” broke house records in bayou country theaters. With the help of the Sundance Institute, his internationally-lauded 1986 Belizaire the Cajun became his first English-language production. Since then Pitre’s works in a variety of media, frequently in collaboration with wife Michelle Benoit, often about life in his native Louisiana wetlands, have earned him numerous awards, including an honorary doctorate and a knighthood from France. In a 2006 book, America’s most famous film critic, Roger Ebert, acclaimed Pitre “a legendary American regional director.”

Glen Pitre and Michelle Benoit’s drama, “Floating Palace,” is based on their screenplay, and it is a hilarious translation characterized by melodrama, a murder-mystery, a tangled five-way love affair, bawdy vaudeville performances and finally … the poignancy of the end of a love.

With just a little imagination, the 100-seat theater becomes one of the showboats that roamed the waterways of south Louisiana in the 1800s, complete with a melodrama for the family and later, an x-rated performance for the all-male audiences.

The entire play — the melodramas inside a melodrama — hangs on the character of Brandon T. O’Glorioso, owner-manager of the showboat Floating Palace. Brandon’s problem is that he’s short of cash, has been deserted by all the players except his wife, and the two of them must play every part, including Brandon being both the hero and the villain (at the same time!).
